On 23 August, Rõuge played host to the crime festival A Good English Crime Story, attracting fans of the mystery genre from across Estonia. Organised by the NGO Krimiklubi, the occasion celebrated the 135th birthday of Agatha Christie, widely regarded as the unrivalled Queen of Crime.

The event featured discussions on Christie’s life and legacy, the enduring appeal of British crime stories in both books and television series, as well as talks about Devon — the scenic region where the celebrated author lived and wrote many of her famous works. Among the speakers were publishers and translators Krista Kaer and Piret Lemetti, crime fiction enthusiast Jaan Martinson, Agatha Christie translator Maia Planhof, and police inspectors from the homicide unit of the Estonian Police. All shared their admiration for Christie’s lasting influence and the charm of cosy crime stories — where justice is always served in the end.

Guests were also treated to a traditional afternoon tea hosted by Ööbikuoru Villa, adding to the quintessentially English atmosphere of the festival.
